July 10, 2014-   David and Bruce talked about the current flood of children from Central America across our southern border.  We noted that their parents’ largely justified belief that they will be allowed to stay once they get here was triggered by President Obama’s 2012 executive order to not deport illegals who were younger than 18 when they arrived (the fact that this applied only to arrivals before 2008 was lost in reports of the order).  And they’ve seen we don’t enforce our laws; fewer than 1000 of these children were returned in all of fiscal 2013, and those were mostly ones with criminal records.  We addressed the chaos at the Texas border, secrecy at the detention camps and Governor Perry’s asking President Obama to send the National Guard to the border that has become mostly open because the border patrol have been pulled back 50-70 miles to handle all the children.  Concluded with discussing the burdens placed on states by illegal immigration and the chain immigration implications of granting amnesty.  Summarized the principles for successful immigration policy. October 28, 2013-   We talked about 'comprehensive' reform.  I explained that means whatever the speaker wants it to mean; more often than not, amnesty for illegals and more immigration of specific types.  We agreed it should start agreement on national interest; I suggested economic.  Then it should address and stop chain immigration, institute education and language requirements.  We pointed out that visa overstays are more than 50% of illegal immigration, inaction on entry-exit database and odds against enforcement of immigration laws.  I urged DM listeners to make sure their representatives and senators know how they feel and, next year during electioneering, to always ask candidates about their positions on immigration. February 1, 2013-   David and Bruce talked about the Senate ‘gang of 8’ proposal, then about the numbers and importance of using entrance-exit database to stop overstaying of visas.  Thatcher observed that these issues are submerged below the political maneuvering, but expressed hope that congressional hearings will bring them to public awareness and something good will come of it. December 6, 2012-   David Madeira opened with Hispanic demographics summary and current DC immigration postures.  Madeira and Thatcher talked about problems of our immigration system and how DREAM Act fits in, Obama's June executive order and how a limited appetite for tough issues may be prematurely sated with actions such as the DREAM Act.  Other discussion points were immigration history, characteristics of successful immigration policies and contra-assimilation things going on in America.  Madeira concluded by asking “what should be the national interest guiding our immigration?”  Thatcher answered that “immigration’s role should be to enhance the vitality and growth of the U.S. economy while not detracting from national solidarity and the well-being of the American people.” Listen to the Interview: Podcast - December 6, 2012
